Vail Women’s Soccer third in Glenwood
The Vail Women’s Soccer Club didn’t take any attitude from the Denver Attitude Sunday at the Colorado Mountain Cup last weekend.
The local ladies 11 – also known as the Kicking Kate-O’s – pounded the Attitude, 4-0, to take third place at the annual tournament, held in Glenwood Springs.
“We brought our game that day,” said Vail vet Michelle Dickson. “We wanted to place higher in the tournament, but I’m proud of our team’s effort.”
There was no question about that effort in the third-place game. Steph Caretto started the onslaught on a nifty feed from Colleen Butler. Jen Davin followed with an exceptional solo effort for a 2-0 lead.
Laura Silverstein, playing in the field, started Vail’s third goal. She worked the ball down the right side and found Butler, who smashed it home. Sarah Hopkins finished the rout with the team’s fourth goal.
Silverstein and Julie Spinnato split the win in net.
Speaking of Spinnato, she also shined in earlier play during the tournament in net.
“Her hands were like magnets,” Dickson said. “She doesn’t play much in goal because we have Laura Silverstein, who’s great. Julie just stepped up with exceptional goaltending.”
In earlier pool action, Vail fell to the Denver Rebels, 2-1. Katie Kean had Vail’s goal on a helper from Dickson. Vail trailed FC Littleton 1-0 at the half, before falling, 3-0.
The team, sponsored by Vail Cascade and Spa, Alpine Bank and KateO Designs, has the week off before heading up to play archrival Steamboat July 26.
Pepi’s prepares for Vail Invite
The Pepi’s men’s soccer team just missed qualifying for the playoffs at last weekend’s Colorado Mountain Cup.
Pepi’s went 0-1-2 in Glenwood
After a 0-0 tie with the Golden Rovers, Jeff Leonardo scored for Pepi’s in a 1-1 tie against Saprissa of Carbondale. A 2-0 loss to Roaring Fork dashed Pepi’s’ hopes of moving through to elimination play.
Pepi’s has the week off before hosting the Vail Invitational Tournament July 26-27.
In the 16-team tournament, Pepi’s will be in Pool A with the Denver Kickers, FC Littleton and America.
