Vail’s Ghent reaches podium twice in super-G

VAIL –After winning both slaloms over the weekend, the U.S. Ski Team member and former Ski Snowboard Club Vail racer Will Gregorak took his third gold with a Super G victory in the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Championship Super G Monday.
Gregorak lead the field by almost a full second with a 1:05.67. Steamboat’s Ryan McConnell skied to a second place in 1:06.58 while Max Marno, another Steamboat athlete, took third with 1:06.63.
Patrick Jaerbyn, a member of Sweden’s Olympic team at Vancouver, and a resident of Edwards, was on hand to take his run at the track in Monday’s race.
Ski Club Vail’s Nathan Asoian finished 11th and Zachary Ziolkowski finished fifth for the J2 men.
The women had two Super G races Monday, and the first race saw Megan McJames, a member of the U.S. Ski Team, trip the finish light in 1:09.54 to claim the gold. Ski Club Vail’s Abby Ghent and U.S. Ski Team member Anna Marno tied for the No. 2 spot with a time of 1:10.27.
Ski Club Vail’s Kaytlyn Samuelson skied to 7th (second for the J2 women), Katharine Irwin was 10th (fourth for the J2s) and Celine Guimineau was 17th and (sixth for the J2 women.)
The women’s second super-G saw Anna Marno take first with a time of 1:09.86, Steamboat’s Shane McLean place second in 1:10.10, and SSCV’s Abby Ghent took her second podium of the day with a third place time of 1:10.35.
Irwin placed second for the J2 women, and ninth overall, Kaytlyn Samuelson took 10th, thirrd for the J2 women, and Mary Sackbauer finished 11th.
“It was a tough, technical course,” said coach Dan Stripp. “There was a jump about halfway down, and the SSCV women did well with making the right moves to get through the run.”
The Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Championships concludes today with a Super G for the men at Breckenridge.
