Vail’s Gregorak shines in Europe

U.S. Ski Team member Will Gregorak, a Ski and Snowboard Club Vail alum, posted a 14th-place finish in the Europa Cup slalom race at Kirchberg, Austria, Monday. Gregorak also claimed first for the junior racers and clocked in with the fifth-fastest second run.

“My goal was to make the flip 30 for the second run,” Gregorak said – the top 30 racers in the first run reverse their order in the second run. “I had a clean course on the second run and took advantage of that; the result was better than I expected.”

Getting results in the Europa Cup against athletes who also compete on the World Cup circuit can be difficult.

“Europa Cup races are notoriously hard to get results in. There are so many great racers in Europe, and points are hard to come by because the field is stacked with these great skiers,” said Gregorak. “Having two really solid runs helps with my confidence.”

This confidence will be a boon for Gregorak as he, and SSCV’s Greta Byrne, have been named to the 2010 Alpine World Junior Championship Team. This team will compete in the Mont-Blanc region of France Jan. 30-Feb. 6.
