Vail’s Vonn wins World Cup

Armando Trovati/APLindsey Vonn finished in the top 15 of a slalom in Bormio, Italy, Friday to clinch the overall World Cup title. She also won the downhill title.

BORMIO, Italy ” Marlies Schild of Austria repeated as women’s World Cup slalom champion by winning the season’s final race Friday, shortly after Lindsey Vonn completed the first American sweep of the overall titles.

Vonn secured the title Friday when she finished in the top 15 and Maria Riesch of Germany failed to finish. Bode Miller won the men’s title the day before. The last Americans to win both titles together were Phil Mahre and Tamara McKinney in 1983.

Schild completed the two runs in a combined time of 1 minute, 52.78 seconds. Her nearest rival for the slalom title, Austrian teammate Nicole Hosp, finished fourth.

Veronika Zuzulova of Slovakia was second in 1:52.85, followed by Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic in 1:53.02. Hosp, last season’s overall winner, finished in 1:53.08.

Schild won her fifth slalom of the season to finish with 640 points. Hosp ended with 515, followed by Zuzulova with 501.
