VMS spotlight – Lauren Utzig

Happy birthday, Lauren Utzig. Vail Mountain volleyball’s lone senior turns the big 18 today. And there are two ways she’d like to celebrate the day. First, a win over Crested Butte at 2:30 p.m., would be nice. Second, there’s a family dinner planned and Homecoming

With the wish of many happy returns, here’s the rundown on Utzig:

Date of birth: Sept. 13, 1985

Parents: Larry Utzig and Lark Broshears; Jo-Ann Utzig

Siblings: Jake, VMS sophomore, and Ursula, 31

What’s it like to have a little brother: “I love it. We get along very well. We have the occasional fight in the car over what CD to play. He wins, and it’s my car.”

Other sports: Skiing – alpine

Any chance you would do Nordic?: “No way in heck.”

What’s it like to be the only senior on the team?: “It would be harder if wasn’t friends with anybody. But I get along with everybody. So, it’s a nice thing.”

Position: Outside hitter

What’s the perfect spike like?: “It just feels really good. What (coach Mike) Garvey’s actually telling me is coming through.”

Funniest Mike Garvey moment: “Finger dancing in the car. Ask him to do it for you.” (Editor’s note: We’re not going there.)

What do you like about volleyball? “I really like being on a team and working really hard. I like all that stuff.”

How much excitement is there for Homecoming?: “Personally, I think this is great. The whole school comes together and everyone in the lower school and middle school is cheering you on.”

Favorite subject: Psychology

College plans: Applying to Montana State

Career plans: “I’m interested in interior design and psychology.”

Mac or PC: Mac

Favorite type of food: Pazzo’s pineapple and pepperoni pizza.

Favorite drink: Cranberry juice

Favorite color: Black

Hobbies?: “I’m trying to play golf. I’m not very good at it. I like to read and I’m learning how to knit. So, I sound like I’m an 80-year-old woman.”

On golf: “We don’t keep score. I’m that bad.”

On reading: “I like historical fiction and non-fiction. I just finished “Girl with the Pearl Earring,’ and that was probably my favorite one. I also like reading stuff on World War II.”

On knitting: “I knit mis-shaped scarves.”

Favorite music: Country and rap

Favorite band: Dave Matthews Band

Favorite movie: Pirates of the Carribean

Favorite movie star: “I think about this all the time in class, but when someone asks me … I’ll go with Julia Roberts.”

Favorite TV show: Friends – “You don’t have to ask a teen-age girl that.”

Favorite “Friend”: Monica

Favorite ice cream: Chocolate

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?: Aspen

If you ruled the world for one day, what would you do?: “Declare world peace.”
