VMS tops Moffat
CRAIG — Vail Mountain School soccer gutted out a tough, but well-earned 2-1 victory at Moffat County Saturday afternoon.
“As a coaching staff, this one had all the markings of a game where we outplay them and lose,” Gore Rangers coach Pete Petrovski said.
You know that sort of game. An outmanned opponent stuffs eight or nine guys in its box defensively, grinding everything to a halt and then it gets one counter, and, naturally, converts?
VMS, and every other soccer team, has seen that movie in the past.
Instead, Ryan Schmidt to Trevor Sheldon in the 70th minute did the trick. The key was good midfield play from Schmidt and Dylan Cunningham. When a team stuffs everyone and their mother and some cousins in the box, the offense has to switch the field quickly to catch the defense off guard. Those two did that and the Gore Rangers survived their trip to the delightful town of Craig. (Please, no Paonia jokes, please. VMS has seen that movie, too.)

The Gore Rangers got their first goal on the traditional combination of Clayton Kirwood to Garrett Cerny.
VMS (6-3 overall) is 3-0 in the 3A Slope and has a week off before heading to Roaring Fork on Oct. 8
In other local soccer, Eagle Valley dropped a 4-1 decision at Delta in nonconference play. David Ortiz had the goal for the Devils (2-5-2). Eagle Valley is at Summit County on Thursday.
