Volleyball and football teams pick up blowout wins

Ryan Slabaugh

The Devils, using 10 service aces, including four by senior Erin Sterkel, improved to 4-0 in the 3A Western Slope League.

“I think that’s what won it for us,” senior Kim Smith said. “We’ve worked on our serves a little, but I think it has something more to do with concentration.”

Ahead 3-1 in the first game, senior Jean Romershauser turned on the heat behind the service line. Romershauser scored eight straight points on her serve – without an ace – and by the time she finished, her team led 11-1. Led by senior Chelsea Abbott’s five kills, the Devils were able to turn Basalt offensive chances into opportunities of their own, thanks to the passing by Sterkel.

“Erin’s good about getting the ball to where we need it,” senior Diane Mayne said.

The ability to dig from the back row allowed Abbott and sophomore Kenzie Shreeve to play flawless volleyball on the front line.

“We’re turning it up real nicely,” said head coach Karl Talcott, who’s team has won three straight matches and seven of the last eight. “Our serving was outstanding.”

Smith and Shreeve also contributed two aces apiece.

The win gives the Devils momentum heading into Tuesday’s matchup at Aspen, which won 16-14, 15-11 Thursday over Olathe to move to 3-0 in the league. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

“We need to keep the momentum to continue running our system,” Talcott said. “We had our best plays running out of digs. We’d take their best balls and turn them into points. If we can do that to (Aspen), we’ll have a good chance.”

Basalt fell to 0-3 in the league with the loss. The Devils improved to 10-3 overall.
