Volleyball: Devils, Huskies pick up wins
Yes, it has come to this.
Politics can make for strange bedfellows and so can high school sports.
Eagle Valley volleyball cruised at Rifle, 25-11, 25-12, 25-9, on Tuesday night, while Battle Mountain survived Glenwood Springs, 14-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12.
To earn a share of the league title, the Devils need to beat Glenwood on Thursday. They also are rooting for Palisade to top Delta and — wait for it — they want Battle Mountain to beat Steamboat Springs.
Yes, Eagle Valley is rooting for Battle Mountain. (The world may have spun off its axis with that.)

The above machinations would result in a four-way tie for the Slope at 11-3 (in alphabetical order, Battle Mountain, Delta, Eagle Valley and Steamboat Springs).
In Rifle, the Devils did what they needed to do. The game within the game for Eagle Valley was working on some new stuff against the Bears.
“We executed how we practiced,” Devils coach Lindsey Myers said. “We were able to work on some new things with our lineup. And the reason we were able to work on things was that we served and passed well.”
Along those lines, Myers gave postgame plaudits to Molly Jewitt and Becy Glutova for big serving runs. It doesn’t hurt that Carlee Morrison was otherworldly in pounding them down.
Meanwhile in Edwards, the Huskies probably gave their fans a collective heart attack by going five games with Glenwood.
“We looked to our bench and our freshmen and underclassmen to steady the ship,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said.
So, postgame plaudits went to freshman Lillian Benway, junior Cassi Kelchner and junior Sara Sullivan.
