Winter season begins for local high schools

Well, actually, Vail Christian hoops got the jump on everybody when it comes to the winter season Tuesday night, taking on Soroco’s JV. And, by the end of the week, everybody except for the three local ski teams and Eagle Valley basketball will have gotten their first taste of action.

The puck drops tonight for Battle Mountain hockey The Huskies take on Summit at the Steve in Breck in the second-annual Battle of Shrine Pass at 7:15 p.m. Possessors of the Shrine Pass trophy, the Huskies are opening their season, while the Tigers are 0-1 after a 3-2 loss to Liberty Monday. The Huskies travel to Regis on Friday

Battle Mountain hoops – both the boys and girls teams – starts with a trip down to Buena Vista for a tournament Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the Vail Christian boys team heads to Grand Valley for a tourney. The Lady Saints have a busy Saturday, hosting Lutheran of the Rockies at 9:30 a.m., followed by North Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. The Eagle Valley boys and girls teams have the weekend off. Both Devils teams open Dec. 13-14 at the Glenwood tourney.

In wrestling, Battle Mountain has a rare home meet Thursday at 6 p.m., against Soroco and Grand Valley, while Eagle Valley opens against Basalt. Both teams are on the road Saturday with the Devils at Steamboat and the Huskies at Middle Park.

Skiing is the last to open. Battle Mountain, Eagle Valley and Vail Mountain Nordic start at Steamboat Springs Dec. 13, while the alpiners first point the tips down Dec. 19 at Breckenridge.
