GLENWOOD SPRINGS — One does not train to run 3.1 miles on race day simply by running 3.1 miles every day.
Eagle Valley cross country had a great showing on Saturday at the Demon Invite — the girls finished second and the boys third — but those results come from work all week.
Take Tuesday down in Gypsum. The Devils had an 80-minute run in practice. While the amount of mileage accumulated may vary depending on the runner, most of Eagle Valley’s varsity runners did 10-plus miles … or so they thought.
Once the 80-minute run was over, coach Melinda Brandt had the team run another “surprise” mile.
“That is not their favorite workout,” the coach conceded.
No kidding, Coach.
But there is a method to the madness.
Tough mental workout
“This week the focus was a lot on training mental toughness,” Brandt said. “We weren’t as fresh going into this race, but those workouts are deposits in the bank for regionals.”
Given what’s going on behind the scenes, it’s pretty remarkable the Devils still had plenty of gas in the tank to do well in Glenwood on Saturday. Joslin Blair is getting rather predictable, winning again. Avery Doan took third. Both Aiden Branch (seventh) and Jack Neifert (ninth) popped into the top 10.
Saturday’s Hoss Award winners were Luca Hart and Maddlyne Schenck.
Next up for Eagle Valley is Northglenn on Friday.
Every person who has ever strapped into a board owes a debt of gratitude to Burton.
