Women’s hockey league starts Oct. 7

Sharpen your skates, and tape your sticks.

The Mountain Women’s Hockey League (MWHL) begins its fifth season Oct. 7th.

The league, for players ages 16 and older, uses the ice rinks in Eagle and Vail for both practices and games from October through March. Players of all ability levels are welcome in the league.

“Many women decide to try the league as a result of their children’s or significant others’ interest in hockey, but they soon become hooked on the fun and excitement of the game,” said Julie Hansen, a MWHL veteran.

Goalies are especially needed this season and play free in the league. Rental equipment for skaters is available through the Eagle Ice Rink.

Beginning on Oct. 7, training camps will be held. The camps are divided by ability for novice, intermediate, and advanced players.

At the conclusion of the training camps, teams of approximately equal ability are formed to play each other during the season. The teams will be formed from a draft of all players by coaches and captains from each team.

League teams are sponsored by area businesses and include the FirstBank Checkers, the Gore Range Brewery Brewsers, the Benderly Economic Eagles, the Buckhorn Valley Wild, the Sandbar Sports Grill Shooters, and an unnamed sixth team.

A tournament at the end of the season determines the overall league champion team. Awards are also given for individual achievements.

The league’s web site at http://www.mwhlinfo.com has more detailed information.

Women interested in joining this league should contact WECMRD at the Eagle Ice Rink at 328-5277 or e-mail Sheryl@wecmrd.org.
