VAIL — The Vail Yeti semi-pro hockey club will defend its Mountain West Hockey League Rocky Mountain Division title against new and old foes this year.

Yeti captain Bill Foster will lead his team against Colorado rivals including the Boulder Bison, Denver Leafs, Pikes Peak Vigilantes and Breckenridge Vipers as well as the Utah Buccaneers, a newly merged team of Park City Pioneers and Salt Lake Ice Wolves. The Yetis will also face-off against some stiff non-league competition including the Black Diamond Hockey League champion Sun Valley Suns and perennial power New York St. Nicks.

The Yeti have many key players returning this year and a few marquee new signings. The top line of Bill Foster, Justin Elmore and Keith Denton returns with Brent Sands and Matt Merritt providing the offensive firepower. On defense, the Yeti will rely heavily on assistant captains Jeff Tarala and Ted Johnson, and former European pro goalie Julien Hernandez.

A spirited tryout camp uncovered many talented newcomers to watch for including recently signed forwards Dalton Speelman, a former Division I college player from the University of New Hampshire, Patrick Knowlton from Sacred Heart University and Chris Knowlton from Denver University and the Colorado Eagles (East Coast Hockey League).

The Yeti’s home opener is Dec. 4 at Dobson Ice Arena against the Vipers. The full schedule, ticket and roster information can be found online at Like us on Facebook for updates throughout the season.
