Mountain Recreation will begin fully replacing the indoor turf at the Edwards Field House on Monday, July 29. The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 9.

This upgrade marks the end of the current turf’s 15-year lifespan as it was originally installed when the Edwards Field House was built in 2009. To date, the 15,000 square-foot turf has provided a year-round space for countless rec district offerings and rentals for special events, tournaments, workshops, camps and more.

To get further use out of the original turf, Mountain Recreation will be donating the turf to the Eagle County Animal Shelter for use in their outdoor play areas at their facility in Eagle.

The Mountain Recreation board approved the project at its March board meeting, allowing staff to contract the services of Turf Solutions Group of Illinois. Turf Solutions Group will remove the original turf and install the new turf and padding system.

The work schedule was selected to minimize disruptions to programs and facility access. During the replacement, the field house will be open. Only the turf area will be closed.

During the request for proposals process, Mountain Recreation received multiple bids from local and out-of-state agencies. Ultimately, it selected Turf Solutions Group for its expertise and proven track record, having collaborated with large recreation providers across the country including the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The new turf will provide an improved playing experience, with a natural grass feel for more natural play. The fine sand infill used in the new turf will replace the traditional crumb rubber, significantly reducing spillage and simplifying weekly maintenance for staff. Additionally, the turf will feature a foam padding system underneath, enhancing impact absorption and promoting safer play.
