Soccer, volleyball and football teams kick off fall prep sports campaigns

Battle Mountain opened the 2026 fall prep sports season with a home win over Bayfield on Saturday in Edwards.

Lela Goehring’s team-high 10 kills and four aces propelled the Huskies to a 25-13, 25-10, 25-22 victory over the Wolverines. Joanna Kent tallied seven kills and Sky Gwin added five more to go along with four blocks for the Huskies, who are coming off a 24-5 season and state tournament appearance last fall. Eve Steinberg led Battle Mountain with nine digs while Gwin and Lucia Daniel each had 10 assists apiece.

Battle Mountain (1-0) travels to Palisade on Tuesday.

Other prep notes

  • Conifer came back from a first-set loss to defeat Eagle Valley 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 in Thursday’s season opener. Riley Weatherred led Eagle Valley with 18 kills. Angie Castellon had five aces and Harper Wansley tallied 13 assists for the Devils in the loss.
  • In other girls volleyball action, Plateau Valley swept Vail Mountain School 25-11, 25-9, 25-16 on Saturday. The Rangers travel to West Grand on Thursday.
  • The Vail Mountain School boys soccer team is 1-1 on the year after a 6-0 win in the season opener against Lake County last Thursday and a 2-0 loss to Crested Butte on Saturday. Alec Uribe, Luca Dispense and Colm Kinney each tallied two goals in the win over the Panthers. The Rangers host Caprock Academy on Thursday at 4 p.m.
  • The Eagle Valley football team fell to Delta 13-7 on Friday in Gypsum. The Devils (0-1) travel to face Basalt on Sept. 4.
  • Battle Mountain played Denver East to a 1-1 tie on the road on Friday night in the first soccer game of the year. Carlos Velasquez found Antonio Escalara for the team’s only goal of the night. Steven Herrera and Luc Glendining split goalkeeper duties. Herrera made two saves and allowed one goal in the first half while Glendining made three saves in the second.
