Lily Dhawornvej and Hahna Norman led the U.S. in the World Cup snowboard slopestyle at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix and Visa Big Air in Aspen on Sunday. Dhawornvej placed sixth and Norman was eighth as New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott took the win. Japan’s Kokomo Murase and Mia Brookes rounded out the podium.
It was Norman’s first career World Cup final and Dhawornvej’s first domestic slopestyle finals appearance. The U.S. Grand Prix is the first Olympic qualifier event for the U.S. team.
SSCV alumna Matt Labaugh earned his first World Cup podium in the ski halfpipe Friday in Aspen. Labaugh placed third with a 93.00 in the final as Alex Ferreira (95.75) and Nick Goepper (94.00) led an American sweep on home soil.

“I didn’t have any expectations — it was the run I’ve been dreaming about putting down for months,” Labaugh told U.S. Ski and Snowboard. “I landed the run, and just couldn’t believe that went into the podium. The run felt so right, I couldn’t believe it when I landed. I was kind of in awe at the bottom. It feels like it’s been coming for a long time. The best part was jumping into my friends, everyone being down there cheering me on was awesome.”
The Grand Prix continues on Tuesday and Wednesday with ski and snowboard big air qualifiers. The finals begin on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Nordic notes: Will Bentley qualifies for U18 Nordic Nations Championships
SSCV Nordic skier Will Bentley qualified to represent the U.S. at the U18 Nordic Nations Championships in Gjøvik, Norway, Feb. 15-23. The event, hosted by the Norwegian Ski Association, features some of the best junior athletes from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia and includes Norway’s U23 national championships and the national junior sprint championships. Athletes will compete in an interval start classic on Feb. 21, followed by a sprint free on Feb. 22 and a 7.5-kilometer mass start freestyle on Feb. 23.
The U.S. is sending nine girls and eight boys to the event. Bentley qualified via his performances at the U.S. senior national championships in Anchorage, Alaska, at the beginning of the month. After placing third, fifth and seventh in the three respective events at the weeklong event, the future CU Buff was seventh in the overall points lists standings — meaning he was the first alternate for the FIS Junior World Championships selection.
SSCV posted several podium finishes at the ‘Super-Q’ Junior National Qualifier event earlier this month at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah.
Peter Kan and Freedom Bennett went 1-2 in the U16 boys individual start 5-kilometer classic. Kan won the race by 23.4 seconds, stopping the clock at 14 minutes, 30.3 seconds. Competing in the NCAA 7.5-kilometer race, Bentley finished 23rd overall out of 143 athletes and was the second-place U18 skier. Bentley was just two seconds behind Bridger Ski Foundation U18 winner Callahan Waters. In the 15k freestyle mass start the following day, Bentley was the top U18 skier and finished 20th overall against some of the best Super Tour and collegiate athletes in the country.
Isla Elton posted the best result for SSCV on the girls side of the individual start, coming through in fourth out of 97 athletes in the U16 race.
