Letter: Lack of safety lighting in Eagle County

Eagle County has faced a long struggle with insufficient safety lighting on our streets. Safety lighting within the valley has been severely limited and has impacted the community negatively.

This is considered a multi-issue protective factor that affects individuals ranging from seniors to young children. Our community is filled with active individuals. Unfortunately, this puts individuals in a vulnerable position, endangering their lives.

Completely dark streets increase the risk of crime, accidents, and create fear, especially to vulnerable populations walking alone. Populations like those using transportation like Core Transit still have to walk a ways to get to their location or home.

Advocating for better lighting for street crossings is definitely a unifying issue within Eagle County. This is a straightforward public safety issue that benefits all across different age groups, and socioeconomic status. It will improve bus stop usage which is environmentally friendly, and important during tourist season. Adding lighting at crosswalks makes it safer and easier for all to use.

Improving lighting at our crossings is a simple project that improves safety and shows the community that their local leaders are listening. It’s something practical, but worth implementing.
