For more than 50 years, Alpenrose in Vail Village has been a beloved destination for authentic alpine cuisine and a sense of Gemütlichkeit, that special feeling of coziness and belonging that goes beyond simple comfort. The Thoma family — with Alyssa and her brother Josh at the helm — took the reins seven years ago and have both preserved and updated Alpenrose, ensuring that the much-loved restaurant will continue to be an iconic Vail dining experience for years to come.

Though Alpenrose is famous for its front deck — a place that’s as perfect for watching people stroll down Meadow Drive as it is for catching up with friends and family — the best kept secret is the restaurant’s inviting back patio. With elements that transport guests to a traditional German biergarten, this vibrant yet intimate oasis is the place to share a few dishes and prost with a stein of Alpenrose’s eponymous Pilsner, brewed in Denver by a master brewer who lived and studied in Germany. Order a few appetizers (the rösti bällchen, potato balls stuffed with Swiss cheese, bacon and sour cream is a particular delight) and savor the long, sweet days of summer.

After a long hike or mountain bike ride, it’s time to fuel up, mountain style. Alpenrose’s menu is a celebration of both time-honored and contemporary Alpine recipes, crafted with seasonal ingredients and a touch of international flair. Among the latest additions are the Schweinemedallion — tender pork medallions served in a flavorful orange-pepper cream sauce with mashed potatoes — and the St. Moritz Potato Cheese Soup, a creamy blend of potatoes and cheese topped with crispy bacon and served with croutons. These new dishes join a lineup of favorites such as schnitzel, bratwurst and the crispy Oktoberfest Hax’n pork shank. Each dish is prepared with care and authenticity, sharing a bit of European love in each bite.

The menu accommodates a variety of dietary preferences, with vegetarian, gluten-free and kid-friendly options available to ensure everyone finds something to love. Summer brings a variety of fresh salads, like the Sommer Wassermelonen Salat with watermelon, feta and cherry tomatoes, and the Sommer Curry, a vegan option packed with veggies and served with a Swiss potato pancake.

Brunch at Alpenrose is served every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, making it the perfect way to start your weekend with a menu inspired by European traditions. The brunch menu features both classic and creative dishes, including the Alpenrose classic breakfast, banana bread and a Nutella waffle. A standout is the pretzel breakfast sandwich, layered with ham, cheese, cucumber and tomato.

“So far, Americans have not realized how good this actually is,” Alyssa Thoma said with a laugh. “But that’s my personal favorite.”
