The Vail Comedy Festival is back in Vail Village this Memorial Day weekend. Dozens of comedians will fly in from around North America for the annual event. Sarah Tollemache, who has been on late night television and Comedy Central, is one of four headliners and half of the podcast “Lady Journey” which will have live tapings open to the public. Mark Masters, founder of the Vail Comedy Festival caught up with her and asked some questions.
Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?
Not yet, but I’ve been training at high altitudes by walking up one flight of stairs in New York while carrying groceries. So, I think I’m ready.
Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?
I had a fun time a few years ago headlining the Comedy Fort and hiking pregnant during the day with my dear friend Delores.

You are a new mom. What’s surprised you most about that?
I learned that I do have time to raise a child. After looking at my screen time report, I realized there’s enough time to raise a baby and get some work done. You just have to use your time wisely and say “no” to a lot of pointless stuff.
What do you know about Vail Comedy Festival?
I’ve heard it’s a stunning mountain setting to do standup in, which is perfect because if a joke bombs, you can just blame the altitude. Honestly, it sounds like a blast — laughter, mountains and probably at least one guy named Tyler in a fleece vest.
Any major events coming up?
I’ve got some dates lined up and I’m working on new material. Also, just trying to keep my baby alive and my career afloat. So you know, no pressure. Just the usual “everything, everywhere, all at once” vibe.
You live in New York City but tour nationally. How does Colorado compare to other markets?
In Colorado, they seem genuinely happy to be there — probably because they spent the day skiing and microdosing. It’s a supportive, fun scene. I love it.
How would you describe your comedy?
My husband’s family might describe my comedy as “vulgar,” but I’d argue it’s more layered than that. Sure, some of it’s dirty, but there’s usually a deeper meaning — at least, that’s the goal. I do sprinkle in some cleaner material, mostly made up of small anecdotes and observations. Think Sarah Silverman: smart, sharp and not afraid to get a little weird.
What is next for Sarah Tollemache?
Hopefully sleep. But also, more stand-up, maybe a new album and continuing to find a way to balance being a mom and a comic. I’m just trying to stay funny, stay sane and maybe unban my TikTok.
