Aleksander Aamodt Kilde experienced a set back in his shoulder rehabilitation process as he continues to try and come back from a devastating Jan. 13 crash on the Wengen Lauberhorn downhill.
The 31-year-old Norwegian star, who is also Mikaela Shiffrin’s fiance, stated on social media that he had been experiencing “increased pain” in his repaired shoulder over the last couple weeks.
“Which really seemed like normal reaction after increasing load and training more,” he said.
“After assessment by the Norwegian Skiing Association’s health team, it was decided that he had to be assessed more closely by a doctor during his stay in the USA,” a Norwegian Ski Association press release stated.
“An infection was then found in the shoulder.”

Kilde had shoulder surgery last Wednesday at The Steadman Clinic in Vail and is now back home in Innsbruck, the press release stated.
“The main focus now is to clear up the infection, and he is continuing antibiotics and further treatment at home in Innsbruck,” the alpine national team’s doctor, Trond Floberghagen said in the press release.

“This is of course a setback, and I have to spend more time in the training period than planned,” stated Kilde, who won back-to-back World Cups at Birds of Prey in Beaver Creek in 2021 and 2022. “It is too early to say when I can be back in 100 percent training, but I will use the time well. I will come back.”
On his Instagram page, Kilde said he will have six weeks of antibiotics every day through a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line “that lives in my arm until the infection is all gone the bone is back smiling.”
“After those six weeks, we’ll see what the next steps will be,” he continued. “I am so lucky and grateful to be surrounded by incredible, caring, brilliant people both at home and away. The team at Steadman has taken such good care of me.”
Shiffrin posted a picture of her with Kilde in the hospital with the caption: “Out of the many lessons I learn from you, one of the greatest is — Smile. Even through the s—.”
