Daily Editorial: Look out for our seniors

Vail Daily Editorial

Senior citizens are a vital part of any well-rounded, healthy community.

Yet, we in Eagle County rarely spend time talking about the challenges our seniors face. And by that, we mean the old-timers who have lived here for decades, not the new, wealthy retirees who are, after all, helping drive up the cost of living.

Only 4 percent of our full-time residents are 65 years or older, according to the 2000 U.S. Census. They make up the smallest demographic group in our county, and that often means they are overlooked by our local policymakers.

Most recently, Minturn town officials said they are considering eliminating the break seniors get on their water bills to raise funds to fix the town’s water system.

This group will feel the pinch if this proposal is approved. That’s why we think Minturn should consider something akin to a “homesteader” exemption; something that continues to give those longtime senior citizens a break.

Our decisionmakers need to consider the needs of this group from time to time. And at the very least, avoid making life for these valuable community members any harder.
