Eagle fire contained, but not out yet

EAGLE ” Firefighters have contained a wildfire that started in Eagle Wednesday evening about a mile north of Hernage Creek Trail. The fire isn’t quite out yet though, and crews are still putting out “hot spots.”

The fire is estimated to be between 5 and 10 acres large, said Lee Ann Loupe, spokeswoman for the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit. It’s been slow putting out the fire because workers are having to hike in and out of the area, Loupe said.

Airplanes significantly slowed the spread of the fire by dropping slurry and water on the fire. The fire is believed to have been started by lighting around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators are still unraveling how a wildfire in Edwards near Singletree started Tuesday. Firefighters still say the fire was human caused but have no new information to release.

Loupe said firefighters responded to 16 lightning strikes Thursday night. While many were false alarms, there were a few small fires that were quickly put out, Loupe said.

The area is still in “red flag” fire danger due to the possibility of lightning starting fires.
