Eagle Valley boys wrestling claims 5 individual wins to finish second behind No. 4 Palisade at home invite

The Eagle Valley boys wrestling team finished runner-up to No. 4 Palisade at the Jody Hern Invitational on Saturday in Gypsum. Eagle Valley athletes won five different weight classes, accruing 140.5 points to finish second in the 15-team field, just 29 points back from the Bulldogs.
Cooper Hern won a 12-4 decision over Palisade’s No. 3-ranked heavyweight Tobyn Trottier to take the 285-pound bracket for the Devils. Teammate Nathan Leeper pinned his way to three-straight wins at 190-pounds and Body Cobb went 4-0 to take the 157-pound title. Meanwhile, Alex Good won his fourth tournament of the year, earning a 13-6 decision over Fruita Monument’s Jace Mizushima in the 144-pound final and freshman Cody Littlepage followed up his big win at the Les Mattox Invite with another win at 106 pounds.

Eagle Valley also had Gabriel Valdez (fifth place, 120 pounds), Rowdy Hollenbach (third place, 132 pounds) and Ricky Avendano (third place, 165 pounds) get on the podium.

Robert Young placed fourth at 138 pounds to lead Battle Mountain, which finished tied for 12th in the team scores.

The Eagle Valley girls tallied 47 points to finish sixth out of 10 teams on Saturday.

Gabby Littlepage pinned Battle Mountain’s Perla Chavez 1 minute and 52 seconds into the third-place match at 115 pounds. Chavez finished fourth to lead the Huskies to a ninth-place team finish.
Luvlyn Ward placed fourth at 125 pounds for the Devils. Ward fell to former Battle Mountain state-qualifier C.J. Traylor, who now competes for Summit, in the third round in a 10-7 decision. The sophomore came back to pin Mead’s Anita Goff. Julia Borejszo finished second at 135 pounds. Ayla Hampton of Summit took the title over Borejszo, pinning the senior to improve to 20-1 on the year. Nora Abbot rounded out the Devils’ scoring, taking runner-up honors at 145 pounds.
Moffat County tallied 90.5 points to win the girls team title.
Battle Mountain will face off against Eagle Valley at a triangular on Wednesday night at Eagle Valley High School starting at 5 p.m.
