Karl Frederick Scherer, 73 passed away suddenly on October 31, 2025. A beloved father, partner, brother and friend, Karl is survived by his longtime partner, Cheryl Browne; his daughter, Karli Smith of Haslet, TX; his sisters Karen Hannan of Gainesville, VA and Krista Strol of New Milford, CT; his brother Kurt Scherer of Bellingham, WA and his five granddaughters who brought him endless joy.
Originally from the east coast, Karl came to Vail in 1972 and as he often said “never left”. He built a vibrant life in the mountains he loved, and shared his time between Costa Rica and Colorado. An avid skier and sailor, Karl’s adventurous spirit was matched only by his warmth and generosity.
He was a gifted commercial painter, known across the valley for his precision and his pride in his craft. He built a successful business not just with skill but with integrity. He cared about people; clients became friends and friends became like family. His laughter, his stories and his deep love for life will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held after the new year and details to be shared at a later date
