Todd Carlstrom, known to many as “The Gnome,” a longtime Vail local and former Ski Patrol member, passed away on October 6, 2025, of natural causes.
Born November 12, 1952, in Bayport, Minnesota, Todd came to Vail for the 1970–71 ski season to compete in the early hot-dogging ski competitions, where his competitive spirit and natural ability quickly stood out. He became part of the valley’s early ski community and earned the respect of his peers both on and off the mountain. Todd worked a variety of mountain jobs before joining the Vail Ski Patrol, where his skill and calm presence made him a valued team member.

His skiing talent even earned him a role as an extra in the Charlie’s Angels episode “Terror on Skis,” something he always took pride in.

Over the years, Todd followed the seasons and his sense of freedom, spending summers in Minnesota, winters in Florida, and much of his life traveling in his van. Known for working as a handyman and living life on his own terms, Todd valued simplicity, independence, and time outdoors.

He loved skiing, golfing, and the rhythm of a life spent chasing good weather and good snow. Though often independent, Todd was a loyal friend who was always around when it mattered, and he will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

He is survived by his brother Dan Carlstrom, sister Ellen McGee, and nephew Dean Carlstrom.
