Prep notebook: Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain baseball split league doubleheaders

Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain split a pair of doubleheaders against league opponents on Wednesday. The Devils defeated Steamboat Springs 8-6 before falling 10-6 in Gypsum while the Huskies went 1-1 on the road against Summit.
Eagle Valley junior Xander DeHerrera went 3-for-3 from the plate and drove home five runs in the first game victory. James Bivins, Ricardo Gutierrez and Hudson Rozga alll collected two hits for the Devils, who pulled away with a three-run third inning. Bivins struck out eight in five innings of work to pick up the victory on the mound.
It was 5-5 through five innings in the second contest before the Sailors poured in five runs in the top of the sixth. Tanner Cobb and Fred Lohne each had three hits for the visitors, who cruised to a four-run win. Anthony Ehlert, Tavin Shreeve and Jackson Woodworth led the Devils offensively with two hits apiece.
Eagle Valley (4-8 overall, 2-2 league) hosts Aspen on April 29 in the first set of games after spring break.
Battle Mountain handed Summit its fourth loss of the year in the opening set of Wednesday’s doubleheader. The Huskies scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth en route to a 4-3 victory. Shaeffer Dodds pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing two earned runs. The Tigers exacted revenge in a 13-1 victory in game No. 2 to improve to 9-4 on the year.

Other prep notes: Thayer continues winning ways at River Valley Ranch
The Battle Mountain girls golf team placed fourth at both the Aspen Invitational at Aspen Glen Club on April 15 and the Glenwood Springs RVR Championship at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale the following day.
Junior Makena Thayer — who won the first four tournaments of the season — placed third at Aspen, tying with Skier Lenna Persson with a 5-over 78. Steamboat Springs’ Katharina Cosby was the only player to go under par, shooting a 1-under 72 to claim the individual title. Her teammate, Kaitlyn Grommeck (77) placed second as the Sailors took the team victory at 255 strokes. Fruita Monument (265) and Aspen (292) rounded out the podium. Caleigh Kackman shot 101 and Abby Harrison carded a 122 to round out the Huskies scoring at 301. Julia Borejszo led Eagle Valley into eighth with a 94.

On April 16, Thayer drilled four birdies to win by five strokes. Grommeck (81) tied with Addison Larson for silver while Persson (83) finished fourth. Fruita Monument (251) had three golfers in the top five to claim the team win as Aspen (265) finished second and Steamboat Springs (268) took third. The Huskies finished 10 points back in the 10-team field while Eagle Valley placed eighth.
Both local teams return to the links on April 30 for the Eagle Valley Invitational at Eagle Ranch Golf Course.

- Eagle Valley girls soccer shut out Summit 4-0 on Wednesday to improve to 5-5-3 and 3-1-1 in league play. The Devils trail only Battle Mountain (6-3-3 overall, 3-0-1 league) in the 4A Western Slope standings. The two teams tied 2-2 on March 25 in Gypsum. The rubber match is set for May 3 in Edwards.
- The Vail Christian boys volleyball team took down Aurora West College Prep Academy 29-27, 25-9, 22-25, 25-21 on Wednesday night in Edwards. The Saints (6-7) are in the midst of a four-game stretch in five days, having lost 3-1 to D’Evelyn on Tuesday. They also play Addenbrooke Classical Academy Thursday night and Denver Waldorf on Saturday.
