Pub Crawlin’ through Vail
Vail, CO, Colorado
VAIL ” The annual Bridge Street Pub Crawl is back, and last Tuesday was the official kickoff of the long-standing off-season event. This Tuesday night Vendetta’s hosts the event. With any luck you’ll be crawling away with an armfull of swag or a ski pass after a night of cheap drinks. More than another excuse to drink though, the Pub Crawl gives locals a chance to hang out and catch up with each other before the ski season arrives and the town’s pace speeds up for the winter months.
Last Tuesday, on a mildly chilly evening, three friends headed toward the Tap Room for just that reason. Cynthia Wood, Bryan Born and Kelsey Ashton aren’t Pub Crawl fanatics, but they do recognize that it gives them an alternative to watching TV on a Tuesday night.
“We like the fact that (it’s) a time that a lot of locals come out and we get to see everyone … and it gives the bars some business. And it’s fun,” Wood said.
Vail residents Travis Poms and girlfriend Katie Jackson were using the Pub Crawl as an excuse to go out on a date.
“It hasn’t been too busy in town so it’s nice to actually come out and have some people out here,” Poms said.
The rules of the pub crawl are simple: Get your official Pub Crawl card at any of the participating bars ” The George, Samana Lounge, Vendetta’s, Ski Bar, The Red Lion, The Tap Room and The Club ” and let the bar hopping begin. At each bar one must buy a drink, get the card stamped and move on until the card is full. Each week the cards must be turned in by midnight at the host bar and prize drawings are held beginning at 12:30 a.m. Prizes include a Vail Resorts four-mountain ski pass, tickets to sporting events and more.
The symbiotic relationship between locals and bar owners is never more fully recognized then during the Pub Crawl, when each supports the other when times are tough. The bars provide cheap drinks, the locals fork over their cash and everyone goes home happy.
Angela Werner, manager of The Red Lion, said they would most likely be dead by 9 p.m. without the Pub Crawl to drum up business.
“It’s just a good way for people to come out and see the new people in town and for long-time locals to come out and have a good time,” said Zach Povey, co-owner of The Club.
