Roller derby comes to Eagle Pool and Ice Rink

EAGLE — The 10th Mountain Rollerdolls, the Vail Valley’s team of hard-hitting roller derby girls, will be joined by skaters from across the region in a knock-down, no-holds barred, winner-take-all, mix-up tournament Saturday at the Eagle Pool and Ice Rink. The action starts at 1 p.m. The Melee in the Mountains promises to be a fun day as the players divide into teams and play for the title of Mountain Melee Queens.

If you haven’t been to see the Rollerdolls play yet, you’re missing out. The team has been together since June 2011, with new members joining all the time. The sport of roller derby has been taking off, both nationally and internationally, as a fun way for women to get out, get fit and show a little of their wild side along the way. These girls will be in full regalia for Saturday’s bout, with fishnet tights, short shorts and maybe even a little lace. But it’s all in good taste and good fun as the skaters are raising money for the Education Foundation of Eagle County, and they promise to keep it family friendly.

The derby girls are always a fun crew, and you would never guess what some of them do off the rink. When the ladies are in derby garb, they’re no longer Krista, Diane or Jodi, but become Special KO, Diane Grenade and Mistress Medusa. The game is always fast-paced, strategic as well as physical, and you’re bound to see folks fired up and a few crashes to boot.

Besides the derby action, which will be fast-paced and hard-hitting, there will also be vendors, door prizes, a silent auction and even some dance shows during breaks. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at Eagle Lodge, Gypsum Liquor and the Get Hi Gallery. Tickets are also available from any derby girl, or email 10thmountain rollerdolls@gmail.com.
