Sen. Udall backs pay-as-you-go budget rules
DENVER – Colorado Democrat Mark Udall says the U.S. Senate’s vote for “pay-as-you-go” budget rules is a significant step in trying to rein in the nation’s escalating debt.
Udall joined other Senate Democrats Thursday in voting to raise the federal government’s debt limit. The measure includes pay-as-you-go rules meant to make it difficult to pass bills increasing the deficit.
Udall says he has objected to raising the debt limit without a commitment to cutting the deficit. He supported forming an independent panel that would recommend ways to reduce the deficit.
The proposal failed, but Udall says he is encouraged by President Barack Obama’s plans to freeze spending and create a commission to come up with solutions to the deficit.
