Uncovering new treasure in Avon

Connie Steiert

Just like the Robert Louis Stevenson book for which it was named, Treasure Island Toys is meant to be an exciting adventure for children. And, in another week, that adventure will become more thrilling for children and more rewarding for adults.Festooned inside with faux grass roofs, fishing nets, starfish and lots of eye-catching finds, Treasure Island Toys in Chapel Square is already a treat for the eyes. An expedition through its colorful aisles is bound to turn up many wonderful finds, including Madeline dolls and doll houses, butterfly kits and learning toys, adorable stuffed animals and Tinker Toys to name just a smidgen of the goodies. But beginning in mid-October, Treasure Island will carry some more utilitarian objects as well, guaranteed to create their own brand of delight.Instead of just a wonderful array of fascinating toys, puzzles and books, Treasure Island Toys will now offer children’s furniture and accessories. No more driving to Denver for hours of searching for the perfect crib for Baby Kate or Tyler’s fantasy dream bed. And no more arranging to have it shipped 100 miles, or ordered months in advance. A short trip to Avon and you will find dependable and creative lines of lively new children’s furniture at Treasure Island Toys that can be carted off that same day. But these are no ordinary, run of the mill beds and cribs.&quotWe are bringing in some fun and whimsical items,&quot explains Treasure Island Toys’ owner Mary Harp. Toys are designed to spur the imagination of little ones, so why shouldn’t children’s furniture do the same thing? The lines to be featured at Treasure Island will do just that. There will be beds in fanciful shapes, like a giant shoe, and beds shaped like fish to turn an entire room into a day at the beach. Or, for that little reptile lover in the house, how about a bed shaped like a giant, friendly lizard?&quotI want it to be really colorful,&quot says Harp. &quotChildren are attracted to color.&quotThe furniture will not only be fun and engaging, it will be durable and flexible capable of growing with the child. For instance, a changing table that is adorable for baby today, will transform into a charming chest of drawers for a youngster later. A safe and sturdy crib for the newborn infant you bring home from the hospital will metamorphous (via an extension kit) into a cute youth bed a few years down the road.&quotIt will last longer than your average children’s furniture,&quot Harp says. And Treasure Island Toys’ furniture and accessories will be from noted children’s manufacturers, such as Room Magic, Smilz and Million Dollar Baby Company.Along with the furniture, Treasure Island Toys will begin carrying matching accessories, such as colorful, coordinated bedding, lamps, area rugs, bright wall hangings and wonderful pictures. The store will also carry toy boxes, highchairs, walkers and tot-sized tables and chairs. In the spring, look for an additional, outdoor line of equipment, including sandboxes and small climbing gyms.If there isn’t anything that quite matches your needs or imaginings on the floor of Treasure Island Toys, Harp will gladly pull out binders filled with lots of other colorful offerings from these reputable companies with order times of just two to four weeks. The idea to expand the toy store to include children’s furniture was something that evolved during the past three years the store has been in operation. Harp has always received requests from customers for children’sfurniture and queries about where they might find suchitems.&quotIt was time someone filled the void,&quot Harp says.Treasure Island Toys will continue to carry an irresistible selection of toys for children of many ages, focusing on the birth-to-10-year-old age group, but including fascinating offerings for older children as well as board games and puzzles for adults. But Harp estimates nearly half the store will now be devoted to furniture as well.Harp plans to blend the two sections seamlessly together with themed offerings. For instance, a cowboy bed she will soon carry will be accompanied by cowboy rugs and bed coverings, and displayed with a child’s cowboy costume and Lincoln Logs. For the cowboy buff, what could be more perfect? And there will be many more fantasy groupings to peruse as well for inspiration. In the meantime, Harp is not only rearranging shelves for the arrival of the children’s furniture, she is clearing out some existing stock in anticipation of the all the holiday goodies and several new items she will offer for the New Year.&quotWe have got some great fourth-quarter stuff on the way including items we have never carried before,&quot Harp assures. That is why Treasure Island Toys is currently offering 50 percent off selected merchandise. So hurry down to Chapel Square. You can pick out an enchanting child’sgift at below normal prices and, at the same time, catch a peek of all the treasures Harp has in store for your child’s bedroom. For more information, call Treasure Island Toys at (970) 748-1708.
