Vail dance festival to feature trio of master classes

Special to the DailyOlga Kostritzky will teach classical ballet Tuesday, Aug. 7, to locals as part of the 2007 Vail International Dance Festival. The festival begins Sunday, July 29 and runs through Saturday Aug. 11.

VAIL ” While the best dancers in the world perform nightly on the stages of the Ford Amphitheater and Vilar Center for the Arts as part of the Vail International Dance Festival, local dancers and dance enthusiasts will also have the ability to strut their stuff as the 2007 festival will also feature a trio of master class opportunities.

Taught by top dancers and instructors, the master classes will explore the worlds of hip-hop, classical ballet and ballroom dancing, with all classes conducted at the Ford Amphitheater. Each class will be priced at $10 per person and space is limited. Classes will be between one hour and an hour and a half in duration.

The classes will kick off Tuesday, July 31, at 4:30 p.m. with a special hip-hop session with Break! These artists have performed alongside Madonna, Janet Jackson, Ringo Starr and Luther Vandross, to name a few. The group will be performing a free show at the amphitheater later that evening in conjunction with the Hot Summer Nights series.

The classical ballet master class will be hosted by Vail International Dance Festival ballet mistress Olga Kostritzky on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 4:30 p.m. Trained at the Odessa State Ballet School and State Pedagogical Institute in her native Russia, Kostritzky danced in Russia before coming to the United States in 1975. Since then, she has taught at various companies and institutions in this country, including Ballet Oklahoma, New York State School of the Arts and Ballet Houston. She joined the School of American Ballet faculty in 1991. This class is for advanced ballet students only.

The final master class on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 4:30 p.m., will feature the fiery ballroom techniques of dance festival favorites Hanna Karttunen and Victor da Silva. The couple first danced together in 2004 on the BBC’s “Strictly Comes Dancing” television series, which was the model for the American sensation “Dancing With The Stars.” Since their debut, the couple has been touring and performing throughout the world, including performances in honor of Prince Albert of Monaco in Monte Carlo and the 2005 Global Media Awards for the International Olympic Committee. Karttunen and Da Silva have once again assembled top couples from around the globe for the Aug. 11 dance festival performance of Ballroom’s Best.
