L.S. “Butch” Mazzuca is a retired insurance industry executive who lives with his wife Bobbi in Edwards, Colorado. After retirement Butch kept busy by becoming a full-time ski instructor for Vail Resorts, a commentary writer for the Vail Daily and an adjunct photography instructor at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards.
He attended the University of Dayton, in Dayton OH where he majored in marketing and psychology, graduating in 1967. After graduation he completed U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico Virginia and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant before going on to flight training at the U.S. Naval Air Training Command Pensacola, Florida. He was designated a carrier-qualified Naval Aviator (both fixed and rotary wing aircraft) In December 1968.
After flight school Butch flew off the USS Guam in preparation for his tour in Vietnam where he arrived in August of 1969 and flew 421 combat missions in CH-46D helicopters.
Upon his discharge in 1971 from the Marine Corps, Butch went to work for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as an Account executive and was recruited by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co, the world’s 4th largest insurance brokerage and risk management firm, in 1977 to expand Gallagher’s business operations in the Rocky Mountain region.
Butch opened Gallagher’s Denver office as a 1-man start-up. When he retired it was a 65-person regional office producing $60 million in annual premiums and fees. As President and CEO of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.—Denver, he had full responsibility for the direction and profitability of all branch operations for 19 ½ years.
