Prep notebook: Battle Mountain basketball teams start the year 2-2

The Battle Mountain boys and girls basketball teams are both 2-2 to start the year.
Ruthie Casey scored 15 points to help the Huskies rally from a 9-point halftime deficit and defeat Soroco 39-36 on Saturday. Teammates Amelia Wansley and Kate Kovacik also reached double figures with 10 points apiece. On Tuesday night in Edwards, Rifle ran away with a 22-point third quarter en route to a 45-37 victory over the hosts. Izzy Kovacik led the Huskies with 17 points in the loss while Casey added 16.

The boys started the year with a 76-50 loss against Coal Ridge before taking down Lake County 60-47 on Dec. 12 and DSST: Cedar 58-47 the following day. The Huskies lost to Rifle 54-44 on Tuesday night. Jackson Wansley reached double figures (10, 14 and 15 points, respectively) in the first three games for Battle Mountain, which faces Middle Park at home on Thursday night.
Eagle Valley boys 5-1, girls 2-4 to start the season
Fresh off earning the No. 12 seed in last year’s 5A state playoffs, the Eagle Valley boys basketball team is off to a 5-1 start to the 2025-26 campaign. The Devils opened the year with three-straight wins over Steamboat Springs, Weld Central and Montrose before falling to Rampart 71-44 on Dec. 11. Sophomore Daniel Anderson got the Devils back on track with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting and nine rebounds in a 20-point win over Caprock Academy on Friday. Eagle Valley came back the next day and defeated the Sailors again, this time by a score of 56-38.
The Eagle Valley girls team is 2-4 after notching a 44-22 win over Weld Central at the beginning of the month and another 34-14 victory over Steamboat Springs on Saturday. Freshman Hannah Miano and senior Ella Webster are averaging 11.7 and 10.2 points per game through six contests for the Devils, who are back in action against Grand Junction on Wednesday night and Moffat County on Thursday.

Eagle Valley girls wrestlers rise to No. 6 ranking
The most recent On The Mat rankings placed the Eagle Valley girls wrestling team sixth in 4A after a pair of successful early-season tournaments.
Julia Borejszo led the Devils with a win at 140 pounds in Soroco on Dec. 6 while Luvlyn Ward picked up a third-place result at 115 pounds. On Dec. 13, Lauryn Ward finished runner-up to Sand Creek’s Karris Carter in the 130-pound bracket at the 32-team Western Slope Showdown in Montrose. Teammate Gabby Littlepage made it to the third-place match, where she fell by a 14-6 decision to Stella Isensee.
Alex Good led the boys at the Western Slope Showdown. The junior went 5-0 to take the win at 150 pounds.
