Hone your art skills with Vail Valley Art Guild summer workshops

The Vail Valley Art Guild is a local nonprofit organization with a mission to promote and foster artistic growth and build awareness of the visual arts in Eagle County. With gallery locations in Eagle and Minturn, follow the Vail Valley Art Guild on Facebook for more information.

Here’s a look at Vail Valley Art Guild spring and summer workshops. To reserve a space at any of these workshops, call Joann Carhart Levy at 970-471-0853. This is the first round of workshop announcements, with more to be added.

May 19: Graphite

Seana Reilly is an Atlanta-based artist who will present a class on pouring liquid graphite on paper. By moving the paper and physically manipulating the graphite flows, one can achieve abstract images. Reilly attended Savannah College of the Arts and Virginia Tech. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the High Museum in Atlanta. Examples of Reilly’s work can be viewed at http://www.sreilly.com.

Cost: $110.

When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19.

Where: Vail Valley Art Guild Eagle Gallery, 132 Broadway St., Eagle.

June 17-18: Painting

Peggy McGivern comes from a family of successful artists. Her vibrant landscapes and figurative paintings are exhibited in Denver and throughout the Southwest. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Denver Children’s Hospital and the Anschutz Diabetes Center.

Cost: $250.

When: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 17, to Tuesday, June 18.

Where: Singletree Community Center, Edwards.

June 28-July 1: Pastel

Gregg Barnes is a very popular artist in the Vail Valley and his workshops fill up fast. Barnes studied at Wake Forest and resides in North Carolina. He has won numerous awards and is a member of the Plein Air Painters Society of the Southeast. His work can be viewed at http://www.barnesstudios.com.

Cost: $285 for studio; $125 for plein air.

When: June 28 – July 1 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Studio workshop is at Cordillera Cafe in Edwards; plein air workshop location TBA.

July 13-14 and Aug. 2-3: Portraits

Andrea Roth Moore will teach how to paint portraits (and animals, too) from personal photos. She has an extensive career painting commissioned portraits. She received her art education at Skidmore and Yale. She was selected for an Artist-in-Residence program at Beaver Creek and has won numerous awards at art festivals in Vail, Beaver Creek, Crested Butte and Boulder. Aug. 9: Watercolor and Acrylic

Mary Morrison is a Denver artist who has been painting, teaching and exhibiting since 1990. Morrison recently held a workshop for Vail Valley Art Guild members at Colorado Mountain College, where she demonstrated mixing and pouring golden paints” She received her MFA in visual arts and painting from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Morrison’s paintings are in many private and corporate collections and have been recognized by the Colorado Arts in Public Places Program.

Cost: $125.

Aug. 13-15: Plein-Air (advanced beginner and advanced)

Don Sahli is a noted Colorado artist who apprenticed under Russian artist Sergei Bonart. Sahli’s work is currently represented in galleries throughout the U.S. His work has appeared in numerous magazines including Southwest Art, Plein Air Painting and Art of the West.
