On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the town of Vail announced that it received and validated nomination petitions from 10 candidates for the upcoming Town Council election. These 10 candidates will run for four open council seats during the Tuesday, Nov. 7, election.

The candidates announced by Vail are as follows:

  • Scott McBride
  • Reid Phillips
  • John Rediker
  • Christine Santucci
  • Brian Sipes

  • Dave Tucker

This field includes one incumbent — Staufer, who was elected in 2021 — as well as Chapin, who previously served on the Vail Town Council from November 2013 to November 2021. Chapin served as mayor for six of those eight years. Sipes previously served on the Avon Town Council from November 2002 to November 2010, serving as mayor pro tem for the second of his two terms. The candidates represent business owners, musicians, architects and attorneys as well as professionals in real estate, skiing, finance and other industries.

The Vail Chamber & Business Association is planning to host a candidate forum for the Vail Town Council election on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Donovan Pavilion. Further details for the forum are forthcoming.

These 10 candidates will vie for four open seats, which are currently held by Council members Kevin Foley, Jen Mason and Staufer as well as Mayor Kim Langmaid. Foley, Langmaid and Mason are term-limited and cannot run for re-election.

The Town Council election is a nonpartisan race and will be conducted as part of the Tuesday, Nov. 7, coordinated election in Eagle County. Voters within the town of Vail will be able to select up to four candidates. The three candidates that receive the highest number of votes will serve four-year terms, and the candidate that receives the fourth-most votes will serve a two-year term.

Following the November election, the newly-seated Town Council will appoint a mayor and mayor pro tem from among the seven council members. The appointed mayor and mayor pro tem will each serve a two-year term.

While the November election will be conducted via mail-in ballots, a voter service and polling center will be located at the Grand View Room on the top deck of the Lionshead parking structure to assist Vail voters with their ballots beginning Nov. 2.

The ballot order will be determined on Tuesday, Sept. 5, by a drawing at the Vail Clerk’s Office (located within the Vail Municipal Building at 75 South Frontage Road, Vail) at 9 a.m.
