Art doin’s to watch for on Labor Day
EAGLE COUNTY – A pre-Labor Day start to school may cool down tourist numbers this holiday weekend. But in addition to their usual collections, some local art galleries have some special goings-on lined up. Here’s a look at some of what’s in store in the local art world for the long weekend. For more on local galleries, see Gallery Row on page ??At Art Novell in Vail, see new work by Ioan Nemtoi, an internationally known glass artist from Romania. The gallery is also featuring other known glass artists, unique glass bells from Transylvania, obelisks by a young Lithuanian glass artist known as Remis and colorful woven tapestry art by Zeleznicov. Show is through Labor Day and ongoing.Art Novell is located in the Crossroads center at 143 E. Meadow Drive.C. Anthony Gallery in Beaver Creek presents works by Colorado artist Katherine McNeill. The artist, who will be in attendance, creates beautifully textured oil paintings, with aspen trees being one of her main subjects. The show will be open Friday from 4-8 p.m.; Saturday from 1-3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m.; and Sunday from 1-4 p.m.
C. Anthony Gallery is located in the Market Square at Beaver Creek.In Minturn, Milhoan Studios & Gallery presents photography from former Vail resident Tom Lamb. Now based in Los Angeles, Lamb will show wide-angle photos of “The Gates” installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in New York’s Central Park last autumn.The photos will also be shown during a presentation about “The Gates” at the Vail Library Thursday at 5:30 p.m.Milhoan Studios is located at 141 Williams St. in Minturn, behind the Minturn Country Club.The Two Elk Gallery in Minturn is moving to Edwards next month, so they’re having a big moving sale. Look for an eclectic mix of old and new, artisan handcrafted items for the home.The gallery is located on Main Street in Minturn.
Cogswell Gallery in Vail is also doing a store-wide sale Saturday through Monday only. The gallery features jewelry, weavings, furniture, Giclée prints and more.Cogswell is presenting a watercolor workshop Sept. 17 and 18; those interested can sign up when they drop by this weekend or by calling 476-1769. The gallery is located in Vail Village below the Children’s Fountain. Pismo Gallery in Vail recently expanded its space to accommodate some bigger pieces and new artists, so it’s a good time to drop by and check them out. Pismo is located across from Crossroads shopping center in Vail. Knox Galleries in Beaver Creek presents Mark Thompson showing his newest bronze “Reverie.” The artist will also do a demonstration of painting with egg tempera from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.Egg tempera painting is usually associated with medieval and early Renaissance painters such as Botticelli, Verrocchio and Fra Angelico. A native of Colorado, Mark Thompson has worked with egg tempera since 1972, choosing the medium because it suits his realistic style and because of the challenges it presents. Thompson builds his colors with all their subtleties of shading by over-painting layer on layer of tempera. His portraits are very personal character studies.
Knox Galleries is located in the Park Plaza at Beaver Creek.At the Vail Library, local artist Nancy Rondeau presents a show of her oil and watercolor landscapes.
