Prep notebook: Battle Mountain girls soccer ties Pueblo West as Devils and Huskies pick up weekend doubleheader wins on the diamond

Freshman Olivia Goldberg scored twice, and Ruthie Casey and Yeimi Castillo put the ball in the back of the net as well, to guide Battle Mountain to a 4-4 tie against Pueblo West on Saturday in Edwards.

The Huskies are now 8-2-1 and ranked ninth overall in 4A according to the latest CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index. Pueblo West moved to 6-3-1 on the year. The Huskies haven’t lost in their last seven games going back to a March 16 defeat against Denver East. The Western Slope league leaders face Glenwood Springs on April 16.

Other prep notes: DeHerrera leads Devils on the diamond

  • Eagle Valley racked up 16 hits in a 20-12 win over Rifle in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Devils defeated the Bears 8-6 in extra innings in the first matchup. In the second, Xander DeHerrera went 2-for-4 from the plate with two triples and four RBI and Ricardo Gutierrez added three hits and three runs scored for Eagle Valley. Xavier DeHerrera picked up the win on the mound. Eagle Valley (8-2) hosts Steamboat Springs on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
  • Battle Mountain also put together a pair of big wins on the diamond over the weekend. The Huskies defeated Moffat County 17-0 and 24-9, respectively, to improve to 5-2-1 on the season. Jack Reed struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in a four-inning shutout in game 1 and Wake Youngblood had 2 hits, a home run and four RBI to lead the Huskies in game 2. Battle Mountain will face Eagle Valley in Gypsum on May 6 at 3 and 5 p.m.
  • No. 15 Vail Mountain School fell to Mullen 3-1 on Saturday. The Rangers went down 2-0 to the Mustangs — the 24th-ranked team in 4A — in the first half, but Mari Renick found Solveig Moritz for the team’s lone score in the second. Vail Mountain School (4-3) travels to Steamboat Springs on Tuesday.
  • The Vail Christian girls soccer team fell to 3-5-1 on the year after losing to Flatirons Academy 5-0 on Saturday in Edwards. The Saints will try to get back in the win column against Colorado Rocky Mountain on Tuesday.
  • Nate Moatz scored three times to lead Aspen to a 9-8 win over Battle Mountain in boys lacrosse action on Saturday. The Skiers (7-1) slid up to the seventh spot in the rankings while the Huskies (7-3) moved to ninth.
