Bavarian charm at Vail’s Alpenrose

From the cobblestone curve of Meadow Drive, it’s easy to confuse Alpenrose with a postcard from the Alps: a quintessential Bavarian chalet lit with softly glowing windows and strings of lights on the patio. Laughter drifts into the Vail evening from friends and family toasting with a beverage or fondue fork.
When you step inside, though, this picturesque moment becomes real. The alpine dining room invites you to become part of the image, to immerse yourself in a modern twist on the traditional that’ll make you feel as if you’ve painted into the scene.
Wander in at après and experience the exhilaration of unbuckling boots, shrugging off a jacket and settling in with something that’ll warm you from the inside out. On the patio, you can claim vintage chairlifts and cozy nooks (complete with heaters), toasting the day with classic schnapps, a Black Forest Martini or a pint of Alpenrose Pilsner. Inside, reclaimed Swiss farmhouse wood, fresh white walls and fur throws soften the clink of glassware, making the dining room feel like you’ve been invited into someone’s tastefully granny chic home.

It’s a sense of comfort — the feeling that you’ve been welcomed here before. A turn through the menu heightens this feeling, where hearty, comfort food invites everyone at the table to lean in. Try the Zermatter Raclette Board, Alpenrose’s playful take on raclette: the kitchen sends out the raclette cheese already melted and bubbling on a plate, ready to envelop potatoes, cherry tomatoes, grapes, pickles, pearl onions and warm bread in a cheesy blanket. Summer guests fell in love with this brunch version; now it returns as a winter appetizer that skips the wait and goes straight to the good part — the cheese.
Soups become the perfect winter warmer when the snow stacks up outside. The beloved mountain climber soup —”Bergsteiger Suppe,” a beef stew with spätzle and Swiss cheese — is is joined by a hearty chili con carne for cold nights and a silky vegetarian pea soup. Salads get their own alpine spin, too. The red beet and feta salad layers peppery arugula with feta crumbles, walnuts and crisp apple slices, providing a bright counterpoint to what inevitably becomes an indulgent afternoon or evening.

For those craving something quintessentially alpine, the schnitzel Rockies & Roses is a perennial favorite with spätzle, cream sauce and lingonberries. Or try the Octoberfest Hax’n, a crispy pork shank served with a German pretzel. If stepping a bit out of your comfort zone is in order, try the winter curry — this veggie-filled bowl of flavor is sure to warm you through and through.
In life, there are times when real life might not live up to a photo; at Alpenrose, the experience is even better than the image you might imagine. Immerse yourself in the alpine charm and bask in the warmth of Alpenrose’s hospitality — it’s not often you can live within a postcard.
