BOULDER, Colo. – Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett, a Democrat, plans to challenge Republican incumbent John Suthers in the attorney general’s race.

Garnett said Wednesday that he will file paperwork Thursday to officially kick off his campaign. He has recently criticized Suthers, who is seeking a second term, for joining a national lawsuit to block the federal bill overhauling health care.

Garnett previously said he was leaning against running for attorney general because he has been the Boulder County prosecutor for only 14 months. The 53-year-old says he decided to enter the race after talking to family and party leaders.

Garnett has a bachelor’s and law degree from the University Colorado in Boulder.
