On Aug. 18, Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported a bear attack at an apartment complex near Eagle-Vail.

In a statement from the agency, an adult male encountered a female black bear as he was leaving a building laundry room. The bear swiped at the man, causing scratching on his arm. While attempting to escape the situation, the victim also tripped and injured his foot. With the help of a family member, he was then transported to a local medical facility where he was treated for his injuries. According to CPW, he was released and is recovering at home.

The incident comes at a time when the state is reporting high black bear counts, as severe drought conditions have forced the wildlife into populated areas.

CPW officers who responded to the incident remained near the complex in an attempt to capture the female bear and her cubs; however, wildlife officials believed there to be the presence of a larger male bear which kept the bears away. A bear trap has been placed in the neighborhood by the agency.
