Core Transit secured $1 million in federal grant funding during the fourth quarter of 2025, marking a major milestone in the agency’s efforts to implement its 10-Year Transit Development and Capital Plan and deliver meaningful improvements for riders across the region.
Funding from the grant will allow Core Transit to construct new shelters and replace aging or inadequate shelters across the system, improving accessibility, rider comfort and safety at some of the region’s busiest stops.
The recent award includes funding through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5339(b) Buses and Bus Facilities Grant, which supports capital improvements such as buses, facilities and passenger amenities and directly aligns with community priorities identified through extensive public engagement.
Core Transit pursued the grant in direct response to multiple rounds of public outreach conducted as part of the 10-Year Plan. Riders repeatedly identified bus shelter improvements as a high-priority capital need, citing safety, comfort and protection from weather as essential to a positive transit experience.
“Shelters may seem simple, but they make a real difference in how people experience transit every day,” said Tanya Allen, executive director of Core Transit. “This grant allows us to address one of the most consistent messages we heard from the community and turn that feedback into tangible improvements.”
