Elk killed on I-70 in Edwards

EDWARDS, Colorado ” At least one elk was killed after being struck in traffic on Interstate 70 near Edwards, the Division of Wildlife said.

Other elk were injured in the incident, which happened at about 7 a.m. Thursday morning, said Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton.

Hampton did not have more information about the accident, except that the elk’s carcass had been claimed as roadkill. The Colorado State Patrol did not return phone calls seeking comment.

The Division of Wildlife constructs fences along the interstate in some areas to prevent crossings, Hampton said. But elk cross the interstate elsewhere as part of their normal movements, he said.

“It’s the Colorado High Country, so elk crossing roads is not unheard of,” he said.
