What does a pulley, a lever, a wedge and a screw have to do with everyday life? These are a few simple machines that make tasks at home and work easier to accomplish.

Simple machines are the basis of all machines, even very complex ones, which allow us to push or pull materials over great distances.

Join Walking Mountains Science Center on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. where third- through fifth-graders will learn how these simple machines work, how they’re built and then build a machine of their own. (This is not a drop-off program — guardians are required to attend.)

Art of Asking Questions

Questions should be celebrated. They have taken us to the moon, cured diseases and squeezed the whole world into a phone.

Science is the art of asking questions.

Using the six classical examples of simple machines, participants will experiment with levers, wheel and axles, pulleys, inclined planes, wedges and screws to accomplish challenges and discover the building blocks of more complex machines.
