Two female-only events are returning to Minturn to help raise money for the Rett Clinic wing of Children’s Hospital of Colorado. The fourth-annual Risers 4 Rett fly-fishing event is Aug. 3-6 and the second-annual Girls on the Rise fly-fishing casting clinic is set for Aug. 6.
“For nearly 15 years, I have been a part of organizing the Risers 4 Rett events that gather 60-100 adults together for a weekend of fly fishing and fundraising,” said Risers 4 Retts board member Mike Shelly.
“While I still enjoy those events, working with the young women at Girls on the Rise inspires me differently; they are our future.”
Girls on the Rise aims to “empower young women through fly fishing and philanthropy” by spending a day “cultivating and encouraging young women to be leaders and stewards of the water and in philanthropy.”
Yoga donated by Jocelyn Laferriere, a casting clinic put on by Eagle River Outfitters, a small live auction by Brett Barker and lunch from Moe’s Original Barbeque is planned for the event, which is open to 20 participants, ages 7 and older, and will be held at Little Beach Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ruby Lindsley participated in the 2022 event.
“Girls on the Rise was such a fun way to combine things I am curious about today and the future,” she stated.
“My parents have always told me that I have to be a good person and help others. As a nine-year-old, this can seem overwhelming and vague at the same time. The combination of activities — yoga, fly fishing, and the live auction — helped me feel more comfortable in my role and responsibility as a good person.”

The four-day Risers 4 Rett fly-fishing event has already sold out its 26 spots.
“Our purpose is to create a time and space for women to enjoy the outdoors and gather together in a fun and healthy setting,” the event website states. “All while supporting a charity that specifically affects many young girls.”
Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopment disorder that affects girls almost exclusively, affecting one in every 10,000-15,000 female births. Most babies with Rett syndrome develop normally for the first six months of life, but then experience a progressive loss of motor skills and language. Over time, movement coordination, muscle control and communication become extremely difficult or impossible. The Rett Clinic requires a minimum of $100,000 a year to support Rett Families at Children’s Hospital of Colorado.

“These young ladies are the ones that will change how we operate in the world,” Shelly stated. “Girls on the Rise is one small way that I can support them on their journey.”
