Wild West historian Paul Marquez knows a lot about genealogy research, notorious outlaws and famous lawmen.

Marquez, current president of the Wild West History Association, will join the Eagle County Historical Society for a special program at the Avon Public Library on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m.

The Wild West History Association is dedicated to the research and preservation of the American West, with an emphasis on its wild frontier days.

Marquez’ presentation will offer budding genealogists tips on how to find great information hidden away in their family history. He will share the story of how his own family research revealed a friendship between his great-great-grandmother and New Mexico’s most notorious 19th century outlaw, William H. Bonny, or “Billy the Kid.” He also discovered a family connection with Sheriff Pat Garrett, the lawman who hunted down and killed Bonny.

“This is a great year for celebrating history. Wild West history is particularly exciting,” said Eagle County Historical Society President Kathy Heicher, noting that 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States and Colorado’s 150th anniversary.
