Icy Independence Pass causes trouble on way to Aspen
Aspen, CO Colorado
ASPEN, Colorado ” Icy conditions apparently caused an accident on Highway 82 toward Independence Pass, east of Aspen, Colorado, on Monday. No injuries were reported.
Authorities found a 1998 Ford pickup truck resting on its top after sliding on ice and rolling over and off the highway, but when sheriff’s deputies and ambulance personnel arrived on the scene, near mile marker 51, the driver had already left.
Authorities checked Aspen Valley Hospital, but no one involved in the crash had come in. The Colorado State Patrol investigated and said icy roads probably caused the accident.
Independence Pass remains open to travel until 2 p.m. on Nov. 7, unless weather conditions force the Colorado Department of Transportation to close it before then. The pass is closed in the wintertime, usually reopening shortly before Memorial Day weekend in the spring.
