Larry Schlichting, father of local man, died

Larry Robert Schlichting, a firefighter from Beloit, Wis. and the father of a Vail man, died Monday of heart failure while climbing Quandary Peak south of Breckenridge. He was 53.He was born Dec. 24, 1951 in Beloit, the son of Howard James and Audrey (Bendickson) Schlichting. He married Christine Wobig on March 17, 1973 in Calvary Lutheran Church in Beloit.

Schlichting graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in 1970. During service in the U.S. Navy from 1970 until 1974, he was stationed on the nuclear submarine U.S.S. George C. Marshall and was the ship’s diver.Schlichting was a firefighter in Janesville, Wis. and was one of the founders of the department’s dive team. He taught swift water rescue, ice rescue and rope rescue. He retired at the rank of Captain on Dec. 31. Schlichting was a bicyclist, hiker, kayaker, photographer and cabinetmaker, and was learning to fly fish. He and wife Christine had spent six months traveling in an RV before his death.

Survivors include his wife; sons Ben Schlichting of Madison, Wis. and Brady Schlichting of Vail; his mother, Audrey Schlichting of Beloit; and sisters Kandi Schmoldt and her husband, Jim, and Cheryl Tierney and her husband, Greg, both of Beloit.He also is survived by his sister-in-law, Annette Mengwasser and her husband, Leo, of Viola, Ark.; brothers-in-law Fred Wobig of Beloit, and Wright Williams and his wife, Michelle, of Houston; nieces and nephews, Dr. Steve Schmoldt, wife Anna and their children, Mya and Sidney; Christine Schmoldt, husband Mike Stratton and their daughter, Autumn; Zachary, Hannah and Natalie Tierney; Sarah and Lisa Wobig and Christopher Williams. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard J. Schlichting; infant brother Gary Steven Schlichting; father-in-law and mother-in-law Eugene and Doris Wobig; grandparents, Arnold and Florence Schlichting and Tena and Arne Bendickson; and sister-in-law Brenda Williams.



Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1992 Shopiere Road, Beloit, Wis., with the Reverend Kurt Handrich officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, Wis.Memorials may be sent to the Schlichting Firefighter Scholarship Fund c/o Municipal Credit Union, 1154 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI 53511.
