FORT LUPTON, Colorado – Weld County authorities are seeking two suspects following a fatal shooting apparently sparked by a fight over a dog.

Forty-three-year-old Hugo Botello-Gonzalez died after being shot during the fight Wednesday night. His wife was also wounded and had been hospitalized.

Weld County sheriff’s deputy Shane Scofield said the shooting appeared to be a continuation of an ongoing fight between the victim and his neighbor over Botello-Gonzalez’s dog.

He said the dog at issue, a pit bull, was taken from the rural property near Fort Lupton on Sunday. There had been complaints that the dog had killed a neighbor’s chickens and had harassed horses.

The people being sought live on the same property as the victim. Their home was searched Thursday morning but they were not there.
