As Manor Vail celebrates 60 years in business this year, the local lodging property will feature a series of events detailing its history.
The first event in the series will take place on Thursday from 5-9 p.m., featuring a dinner and an evening of storytelling from local author and Vail Daily reporter John LaConte, whose recently published book, “Notorious Hunter Sir St. George Gore,” contains details about Manor Vail’s first restaurant, the Lord Gore Club.
LaConte will share how the Lord Gore Club’s efforts to furnish its walls with paintings of its namesake would eventually lead to the publication of the first book about Gore, “The Amazing Adventures of Lord Gore,” by Jack Roberts.
“Roberts’ book set off a chain of events which led me to my own book,” LaConte said. “On Thursday I’ll share stories about him, Gore, the Lord Gore Club, and a few other interesting details and facts about Manor Vail that had not been known previously, which I discovered while researching my book.”
Manor Vail’s impressive Western art collection will be on display at the event, including Roberts’ original paintings of Gore, which have not been available for the general public to view in recent years.

The evening will feature a “Lord Gore Flashback Menu,” containing a three-course prix fixe for $80 (not including tax and gratuity), and a free, signed copy of LaConte’s book will be included in the price.
LaConte will take questions about Gore, and the event will also feature $15 martinis and Manhattans.
“I think people will be surprised to hear how Manor Vail’s history intertwines with so much of what we think we know about Sir St. George Gore, the namesake of the Gore Range and Gore Creek in Vail,” LaConte said. “On Thursday we’ll separate the fact from the fiction.”
