VAIL — The Vail Vitality Center will host a conscious movement workshop led by Amber Ryan on Friday.

The 5Rhythms is a movement practice created by Gabrielle Roth in the late 1970s.

It is a movement meditation practice focused on moving through five essential rhythms: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness.

While some rhythms come naturally to us, others feel more foreign. The movement through the rhythms is designed to bring out each individual’s creative potential and has proven to be a catalyst for deep healing in the body, heart, mind and spirit. Ultimately, the practice is guided by the principle that if you put the psyche in motion, then it will heal itself.

Eagle County resident Dominique Jackson is responsible for bringing the workshop to the Vail Valley. After her first 5Rhythms class in Montreal, Jackson says she left feeling “fully recharged and connected to something greater.”

“5Rhythms is something positive. It’s a great opportunity to sweat and it builds community,” she said.

Jackson, who is taking her first steps to become a 5Rhythms teacher, calls 5Rhythms a “powerful tool to explore deeper levels.”

Ryan will arrange the music on the spot.

“The music starts slowly, builds to a peak and then tapers down at the end of the wave to incorporate each of the 5Rhythms in every wave,” Jackson said.

Attendees are encouraged to practice barefoot in order to feel more balanced and grounded. Jackson recommends participants wear loose-fitting clothing they’re comfortable moving and sweating in.

‘Incredible Presence’

With a background in theater and dance, Ryan studied under Roth. She travels internationally leading 5Rhythms workshops and retreats.

“Amber is very approachable and has an incredible presence,” Jackson said. “She sees and listens on a deep level and embodies the 5Rhythms.”

Jackson plans to bring Ryan to town a few times a year to teach classes and in between she will “hold space” for people to practice together.

The cost is $25 in advance or $30 day of. Call 970-476-7960 to register.
