The town of Gypsum has wrapped up the project on U.S. Highway 6, but pay attention. There have been some changes to the speed limits.

Perhaps the biggest change is the speed limit between Eagle and Cooley Mesa Road — the intersection leading to Costco. That speed limit is now 45 mph the length of that stretch of road.

There’s now a couple of miles of four-lane road on that portion of road. In exchange, there are no more acceleration or deceleration lanes. At the Aug. 27 Gypsum Town Council meeting, Town Engineer Jacob Rivera said the lanes and lower speed limits are an attempt to ease traffic and enhance safety.

The speed limit briefly returns to 55 mph west of Cooley Mesa Road into town, but then drops back to 45 mph, then 35 mph. But the limit drops to 25 mph just east and west of the intersection with Valley Road.

In a memo to the council, Rivera noted that future development will probably include new traffic lights at Highway 6 and McGregor Drive, as well as the intersection of Earhart Drive, both in the Airport Gateway area. New roundabouts are planned at the entrance to the as-yet undeveloped Tower Center project and at Sunny Avenue.
